I don't think it's a good idea to judge the entire American auto industry by the experience you've had with one Dodge Neon, but I will admit that American manufacturers haven't placed a high priority on producing high-quality small cars. This is changing, however. There's a lot of excitement about the upcoming Ford Fiesta. It's been a huge hit around the world, and it's finally coming to the U.S.

I think that free trade, globalism, and capitalism have their limits, so I don't see that as something to really celebrate.
I am not thrilled about it either, since I am in American manufacturing and trying to keep my job.

But the reality is labels do not mean much these days.

Defining an American Car - MSN Autos

Built in Mexico is Chrysler's PT Cruiser, whose looks harken back to the American gangster cars of the 1920s and '30s.

In fact, the Toyota Avalon has more domestic content than a PT Cruiser—70 percent vs. the PT Cruiser's 61 percent. The Avalon is built at a factory in Kentucky.

Yes, that's true, but Toyota's headquarters are in Japan, so ultimately, that's where the profits end up.

Again, it's not simply a matter of parts content and assembly. There are other things to consider.

Another note about Toyota:

Quote:
"They've used the Pacific Ocean as a great defense to producing documents," said Graham Esdale, a lawyer in Montgomery, Ala., who has sued Toyota. "If Ford or General Motors tells you something and you don't believe that it's right, you can get a court order to go get access to the documents instead of relying on them. We can just go there and start poring through documents. We don't have that with the Japanese manufacturers."

Registered Democrat, actually more independent than anything else, like most Coloradans

1998 Chevy Malibu (major lemon edition)

2003 Honda CR-V, the greatest car we've ever owned, even if we did buy it from John Elway

2004 Toyota Corolla (DH drives, he's an Indy)

This type of thread cracks me up because so many people end up lying about the car they drive just to feel "better" about themselves. Americans are some of the dumbest people when it comes to finances, buying a car is probably the worst investment anybody can make and some people are proud to brag about what they "own" or better yet what they "owe"

I drive a 1998 Ford Ranger, I bought it brand new and I am very happy with it, I have no car payment, my insurance is 35 dollars/month(Thank you Iowa for low insurance rates!) and this truck has served its purpose many times over, it was very convenient when I needed to haul stuff around and it still looks good. I have no kids, I am not married, so it is a perfect vehicle for a single person like me and the part of the country where I live in(Iowa)

My next vehicle will be a F-150 and I will buy it brand new only if I can write it off as business expense and have the taxpayers subsidize it for me.

Oh yeah, political leanings, Independent, I find Republicans as pathetic as far Left Liberals.
