Why haven't puerto ricans been able to move out of the bronx harlem ghettos to suburbs nearby or finish college, create business in their poverty stricken neighborhood.(I'm half puerto rican so you can't say im racist) Puerto Ricans have been coming to nyc since the 1940's but they haven't progressed much in about 70 years. Other latinos from central and south america from queens, brooklyn are doing much better even though they might be illegal.
I think alot of PRs have progresses, however those have left NYC for the most part..leaving the poorest, least capable behind. When the Bronx was burning, you think the only ones leaving the area were whites? Lots of middle class of every color left, including PRs, and have continues to leave since that time. What remains of the population is nothing more than the least adaptable/capable people, the ones that could not leave for the most part. If you want to see the bulk of PRs who have progressed, you should go to those areas, with Florida being a shining example. Look at it this way...would you go to the mountains of Appalachia and say "Wow, Americans are so poor, it seems like they live in extreme poverty..some don't even have electricity, like they have not progressed in the last 100 years." Would that be an accurate desciption of Americans? No. Is it an accurate assessment of a SEGMENT of the population. Yes. Clearly this is an extreme example, but you get the point. If you are looking for the population of PRs that have progressed, you don't go to East Harlem/South Bronx, for example. The same reason the rest of the working/middle class population fled (and is just now THINKING ABOUT RETURNING) is the same reason PRs working/middle class population left. However, it should be noted that in the Northern Bronx, for example, there are middle/working class PR enclaves, they are just not known.
A lot PR's have moved to the suburbs. East Harlem, the South Bronx have moved from these areas into the suburbs, or other areas of the country. Other Latin groups and Africans are replacing Puerto Ricans in these areas.
The largest groups that are receiving higher education, and subsequently leaving the NYC area are specifically, African Americans, Italian Americans, and Puerto Ricans. The statistics are not out yet on how the economic downturn has changed this.
I concur with you to a certain extent. There are lots of Puerto Ricans that are still in NYC, and there are lots of Puerto Ricans that have left NYC. You have to remember that the first Puerto Ricans that came to the US came to NYC. After the years have passed they have moved to Massachussets, Pensilvania, Florida, New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio. Also, I would like to say I have been to Orlando, Florida, and there is a big population of PRs there that are from NYC. However the have moved to Florida. This shows that a lot of PRs moved away from NYC.

Co-Sign. I've noticed over the years that the only people that still live in the hood are the people who can't afford to get out of it.
Historically, one of the reasons Puerto Ricans came to the Northeast was because of the advantages of jobs in the manufacturing sector and they were taken advantage of for cheap labor.
