I think we are all racist by nature. There's probably some sort of primal survival necessity built into us that makes us initially shun others who are not "one of us". Maybe it kept certain populations apart in prehistoric times that if mixed would have resulted in disease or genetic mutations. I don't know. But it seems to be inborn, just as we all have the natural propensity to take what does not belong to us.
We learn not to steal through moral teachings agreed to by society and enforced by laws for those who don't conform. Racism can be handled the same way. Whatever the reason is that humans have this tendency to separate into "them v. us" because of skin color, nose shape, or whatever, it is no longer applicable. We have to teach ourselves to override the tendency because it harms others, just as we teach ourselves not to steal for the same reason.
I am white and was raised that prejudice was wrong. However, since I rarely ran into people of other races growing up, there wasn't much opportunity to put the theory into practice. I became an adult, worked with people of other races, lived next door to black people as well as people from the Middle East, and I've had a black brother-in-law for thirty years now.
But still--fifteen years ago when I joined a bowling league through work that played in Jersey City, on the first night I walked into the alley and was shocked to find that most of the bowlers were African-American. I'm not talking about my league, I already knew that many of my coworkers on the teams were black. I'm talking about the other people in the bowling alley.
Now this makes no sense at all. Why WOULDN'T black people be bowling? I still am not sure why I thought they didn't bowl. Maybe in my mind black people were supposed to be too cool for bowling? I didn't say anything, of course, but later on another friend on the team (Cuban) said the same thing to me--she was surprised to see so many black people bowling. She was just as exposed to black people on a daily basis as I was and yet here we were having this bizarrely irrational and incorrect perception.
Anyway. Here's a news flash, lol. Lots of black people go bowling.
If someone of any race is a racist why are they afraid to admit it?
In the old days, people were more honest and upfront about their racial bias. Now people are more subtle about their motivations and know that bluntly stating their racial motivations hurts their cause, so they know better than to give ammo to the other side.
Why wont people admit it if they're Socialists or Communists?
I dont know you would have to ask one
