As many of you guys know, I am a conservative. There are many areas where I disagree with conservatives and one of these areas has to do with public transit. Why are conservatives so against improving public transit? I am a professional, college-educated person who rely solely upon public transit in Los Angeles Metro area, which is finally starting to see some much needed improvements. I have noticed that in a lot of conservative areas and suburbs, public transit tends to be scanty and limited. Why is that?

Because it would probably require some government involvement and tax revenue. That pretty much kills it right there for most of them; they would sooner take a mule and buggy to work.

Dems want more bike trails, more parks, less traffic lights, less driving lanes, smaller cars, no driving days, and hippy day observed.

Unfortunately, I think that public transit stands for everything that today's Republican Party is against. I can easily hear them calling public transit "socialist".

You know; I actually think there are a lot of conservatives who do support better public transit. However, one problem is that a lot of them reside in suburban areas that won't necessarily see a direct tangible benefit (at least at first) from a new system, or a system extension.

Usually, planning emphasis has focused on using downtown as a hub and sending out lines into the suburbs as spokes, while overlooking suburb-to-suburb transit.

But in turn, one reason that happens is because people take themselves out of the planning process from the start.

It's important to get involved early during the planning process, and then to stay involved to help direct the system's growth and implementation.

You're missing the point. The OP started a legitimate thread, asking a good question. You in turn hijacked it and used to as forum to regurgitate empty slogan talk.
