A new policy allows school administrators to go through a student's cell phone messages and search for what they call "inappropriate messages" and, if they find any- whether sent or received- the student will be expelled from school.
My view is that this is a clear violation of the rights of students. If the student is caught with a cell phone (and YES, they should be BANNED from school), the student should be punished for that only. It is not the business of a school to prowl through a student's cell phone for what they think is "inappropriate" content. Somebody will hopefully take this to court. And another thing schools need to do is quit giving back confiscated cell phones. This is what should happen when students are caught with cell phones:
I know when I was in school if they took your pager, cell phone, camera etc you did not get it back until either a parent came and got it or at the end of the year. I was never dumb enough to carry those things to school.

I would not ban students from bringing cell phones to school but the rule would be that they are to be off and left in your locker during the school day. And if a teacher catches a student with a cell phone, the phone should be destroyed right there in front of the class. The teacher should keep a bucket of salt water at the front of the room so the whole class can witness the phone being dropped into the bucket.
I heartily disagree with them being allowed to destroy it...but heartily agree that they should not be taken to school to begin with.
Of course, on the student's lunch hour, their time should be theirs to do with as they wish. I don't even see why campuses should be "closed". During lunch, students should be permitted to leave the campus if they so desire. The time is theirs.

And really, the only people that teacher would be punishing would be the parents who paid for said cellphone. I seriously disagree with teachers destroying $100-$400+ worth of technology because a stupid kid did something stupid. However, any cellphones should be confiscated and held until a parent picked it up or the end of the school year - whichever is first.
That being said, I don't think the teachers/administrators should have any rights to view what is the phone unless permission is acquired from the parents.

In a perfect world, cellphones would be deactivated upon entering the school building and reactivated upon exiting. Until then - what you said.

Cell phone jammer. Would be a good idea to implement in a LOT of places.
