I think the Independents term came from people like me that don't trust either party as far as we can throw them. The people that just want common sense governing that adheres to the Constitution for the most part and follows the original tenents our founders laid out:

establish justice,
ensure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense,
promote the general welfare, and
secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.

They've gone way beyond that.

"Progressives" sounds better than "half-assed bolsheviki."

Much as "conservatives" sounds better than "know-nothings redux."

Yea, progressives are really terrible. Blame them for having weekends off, child labor laws, worker safety laws, workmans compensation, women's right to vote, clean air and water. Just terrible these things aren't they?

Default Who started this "Progressives" stuff?

The 'Progressive' stuff has been around for a while - see previous posts (well, the intelligent responses) - in different iterations, depending on when or how applied. Wikipedia discussion here. As far as the current use is concerned you might start with Teddy Roosevelt, although a Republican, is said to have been a Progressive. Woodrow Wilson, the first BIG Progressive of note, persuaded a Democratic Congress to pass the Federal Reserve Act, Federal Trade Commission, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Farm Loan Act and America's first-ever federal progressive income tax in the Revenue Act of 1913.

Progressives can be either Democrat or Republican and identified as those who would support government enacted at the federal level. Glenn Beck might say Senator Lindsay Graham (R) is a Progressive. Hilary Clinton claims to be a progressive of the 'turn of the 20th century' variety.

The current government tends to be aligned with the Progressive movement.

Sure, and we would have had civil rights a few years sooner if the Dems hadn't blocked legislation under a Republican president.

No, it's not a crock. It's history. I didn't even say who was right or who was wrong. I stated fact. Liberty= Liberal, it's obvious. Whether modern Liberals are true to classical liberalism is up to debate. (I don't think they are true to it) But what is not debatable is the origins of the terms Liberal, Conservative and Progressive.

The only reason I would ever call progressive dems liberal is for clarity.

Do want to know the most liberal politician in the US right now? Ron Paul.

If you don't believe me pick up a book called Capitalism & Freedom by the foremost free market thinker in the 20th century, Milton Friedman. Its not an easy read, don't hurt your brain.
