Yeah, I have to say it was a bit overblown... what in the world was someone thinking of calling Police and SWAT teams to this place.. why? Of course the homeowner was in the wrong since its a housing code violation and should of submitted plans to the department for approval... but what emergent need was there to call in a SWAT team?

That's pretty cool, I have always wanted to build a secret bunker like that under my house.

He shouldn't have cooperated with them. This is what happens with those control freaks in code enforcement.

Lesson learned:

Bunkers are best constructed in rural areas instead of inside city limits.

Build a basement, get a visit from the SWAT team... What's out of the ordinary about that?

"Among the items recovered were several weapons, two inert grenades and several 55-gallon barrels that turned out to be empty, Matthews said."

Don't most Texans own several weapons? Yep, scarey stuff right there: a cooperative homeowner who gives code enforcement a tour, inert grenades and empty 55 gal drums (probably for water storage). Should have called in HS Sec. Napolitano in along with the FBI too. It must be slow in TX since Janet Reno left Waco.

Sounds like an ok inspection to me. If the ding dong had been up front with the building department and scheduled inspections there probably would not have been a problem. I'm a self proclaimed gun nut but this guy brought the heat on himself by being secretive about his bunker until it was discovered.

Since when does not getting a building permit require a SWAT team invasion of a home? And do you understand why someone might not want a plan of a bunker on file?

Austin wouldn't have approved that permit. Plus it could also be used as a viable tornado shelter.
Another article stated they planned to bulldoze the home and fill in the bunker.

Poor guy..not on any terrorist watch list or part of any criminal investigation.
Just a vietnam vet building a bunker..under his house, not his neighbors, not encroaching on anyone else property.

During my drive home a radio talk show had people calling in with their opinions. Very varied responses. They seemed to be either a) against the government doing this raid or b) glad the government did this cause you never know what this guy might do in the future that he needs a bunker. Several of those callers rushed to judgment and thought this guy a potential domestic terrorist and that the government did good.

Austin btw is a liberal city.
