I would say whites spend just as much except it is on practical investments instead of junk.....
Whites buy real estate, save for their kids college, etc.
Blacks buy spinners, boom boxes, weaves, gold teeth, etc.
While your generalizations are alarming, you actually may have unintentionally made a point. The article points at black families relying less on stock market etc, compared to white. Perhaps real estate too. These two have increased in value a lot more, than, say, investing in gold would have. Gold barely doubled in value between 1984 and 2006 while investments got multiplied.
I never heard or read that he made that statement, so if he did make that statement it just proves that even Obama can make ill informed and ignorant statements lumping in every minority for the failures and mis-fortunes of others. Generalizing an entire group to make a point is NEVER acceptable, no matter who makes it.
Ahh I get it... You can write stories about how blacks are poorer than whites because they dont save, but you cant talk about it!!!

btw, is this chart foreign to you?
There you go spinning again. Your original statement concerning this article started by the OP was a complete ill informed generalization concerning MINORITIES, not some, not most, not a few, but MINORITIES.
Instead of recognizing that you generalized and lumped all minorities into this group like the OP article, your now stooping to spin. I do NOT agree with the article and NEVER agree with generalizing. If you want to continue to pull out stats for what ever reason, fine, but how does that support your ill informed statement?

The story did THE SAME, and listed reasons for it.. Did you even read it?
