1) your name
2) your address
3) your phone number
4) your buying habits
5) your average spending habits
6) your last purchase at their store, what it consisted of and how much you spent

So, how is Microsoft's Windows authentication monitoring program "gleening" any personal information off of you, than you using your credit card at your local supermarket?

some of what MS is looking at:
Your Microsoft software are legitimate
other companies (say Quicken) can choose to opt-in to monitor their installed software to check that your copies are legitimate.
Your OS settings and computer information (in case Windows has an error, they can track that error to improve their OS in the next update).

Own any adobe products ?Well, Adobe has their own Authentication program that installs when you buy and install any of their software. and that program exists for all OS"s that run their program.

so you and Emily can continue to live in your paranoid mindset.

But if you don't want to be hypocrites, then cut up every single credit card and debit card you own; get rid of any supermarket club card you own, cancel all of your bank accounts; turn off your electricity and water, and trash collection. Turn of your gas (if you have it) . Disconnect yourself from the internet, throw away all your computers. Get rid of your cable/satellite service, cancel your cel phones - because in more ways than one, all of these services provide your personal information to someone in some form or another 24/7

and yes, it has always been an OS war. Apple vs Micorsoft vs Linux - the war has been going on ever since Jobs and Gates split apart over 30 years ago. As old as Nintendo vs Sega and then Nintendo vs Sony vs Microsoft - its the "I'm better than you' attitude of all the fanboys out there.

Well, Emily, your post was excellent and raised questions and issues all should be aware of and be thinking about. Directed to an educated audience of mature adults, it would have resulted in an uplifting and very worthwhile discussion. But, of course, we knew that would be very wishful thinking. So.......the real world population being what it is, we get the above. It was a mile over their heads.

And that sad reality explains so much of what is and what isn't going on around us today. But at least you tried - and for that I thank you.

I personally would only use a credit card in a grocery store if I discovered I had no cash to pay for my purchases. This rarely if ever happens. I rarely shop at stores that give discounts only to courtesy card holders and I give most of my business to markets that don't have or require the use of courtesy cards..that offer all promotions to all of their shoppers -- no matter what type of plastic they might carry.

You're wasting your time Emily. Sometimes I think that Americans have lost all their healthy survival instincts. Just be glad that you still have yours.

Yeah you have to read the fine print on anything that you even think about installing. If in doubt don't install. Also I just block permission via firewall to anything that doesn't require it. All sorts of crap asks for permission to access the net but it won't get it.

I sure do admire your persistence, Emily, but you are addressing people who are simply not wired right, as reflected by their knee-jerk refusal to pause and reflect on the concept you are talking about. They are the poster children for America's modern intellectual bankruptcy - and because of their numbers are by far the most significant threat to the future of freedom that we have ever faced.

I have participated in this debate on different forums many times over the last several years and it is always the same. Typically there are a few like you who "get it", but they are usually drowned out by the chorus of zombies who cannot, no matter how patiently you attempt to tutor, even understand the conceptual difference between placing you under suspicion of theft without cause in a scorched earth search for "criminals" and a company fine-tuning their marketing efforts based on your purchase history.

We have failed as a nation to maintain an educated population who thus stand vigilant against the enemies of freedom, as history has shown we must. We are paying a dear price and I fear it is only a down payment on the bill that will come due soon.
