What different chains of grocery stores are here? And which ones have the better meat department?

Thanks

Publix has a stranglehold on Florida, and for everyday stuff or a quick trip for a forgotten item, they're my favorite. For a bit of variety, though you can't ignore Fresh Market. It has a lot of good stuff--a lot of specialty items you won't find in regular stores. They don't have a lot of the things you expect at the larger supermarkets, though, like aisles of paper towels, chemicals, and books/magazines. They are almost totally "food". And yes, expensive food in most cases...but I'd certainly say they have the best meat department (and produce, and coffee to a lesser extent).

There's a Fresh Market in Vero Beach, expensive but it's a place to go for what you can't find at Publix. Publix has the sorriest produce department. It's just the basics and for some reason their bananas are always mushy, even when they're still green. Fish.. forget it. They used to make excuses as to why they didn't have fresh wild salmon (in season). They were always waiting for a truck to come in. Now we're in MA and enjoyed wild Coho last night when I asked if the season was coming to an end I was told they have another order coming in Monday. Funny how the wild salmon season only lasted a nano second in Florida.

I love the Fresh Market, but I'm also use to Trader Joe's and Wholes Foods.

After watching 'Food Inc' a few month ago I have sworn off supermarket meat. I found this local farm which I have yet to try. It's pricey but I think I would rather have less of something excellent than more of .............. well google the documentary, and make up your own mind.

Terra Verde Farms of Florida

They have a storefront in Jupiter, but they do local deliveries also.

Well, perhaps not literally, but it seems there's a lot of them around in every FL town I've visited--sometimes within walking distance of one another.

Still enjoying wild salmon (unfrozen) here in the northeast. (Oct. 9) How's the supply in Florida?

Hale's Market down by Miracle Mile has the BEST meat department. They also have excellent fresh shrimp and fish. No comparison with Fresh Market or Publix. We've been very disappointed with Fresh Market. Publix is really quite good for a chain store. They really try to be customer service oriented, which is nice to see since we're from the Northeast and used to NO customer service.

That sucks! I don't like stores with bad produce. I am very picky about lettuce and such.
