When do I need to get a Florida Drivers License? I am still house shopping so I do not have a permanent address and was wondering since I have a Louisiana plate on my car and have a Louisiana DL, that perhaps if I were stopped for some reason I would have some explaining to do. I imagine I will need it as soon as I have a legal residence but thought to ask. When will I also have to secure Florida auto insurance?

Legally, you're directed to change your registration within ten days of becoming a resident. 30 days to change your license. You have to provide proof of Florida insurance to register your vehicle. You can use your FL registration to apply for homestead. Be forewarned the tags are going to cost around $400 the first time. This includes changing your title to FL, first years reg. fee, and a hefty impact fee.

Thanks for the info, Harry. Wow, only ten days to get both insurance and registration ?! That seems a bit on the tight side. Is it a law that is enforced strictly ?!

Nope. It took me a few weeks before I got mine done. They have really no idea if you are just visiting or if you are a resident. Just get it done ASAP. It was an extremely tough pill to swallow when I wrote the almost $900 check for our two vehicles! Also, your insurance is going to go through the roof. That is one thing I hate about FL, but at least there is no state inspection, and not a big annual tax.

No, not strictly enforced. Just get one done right away to settle homestead requirement.

Default Florida Drivers License and auto tag

Now that I have a house I am ready to get a Florida auto tag and drivers license. I recently bought Florida auto insurance but not sure what comes next. Do I get the drivers license first ( converted from Louisiana) or do I get the auto tag? and where do I go to get this done. Does one location do both. I have my social security card and Louisiana drivers license and proof of insurance, is that sufficient?

Get the DL first, then register the car. All the DL offices have recently closed and are now located at the tax collector's office. I'm pretty sure you can get it all done at the Civic Center on Walton Rd.

When your wife gets her license, make sure she has the marriage license to prove her name change along with the birth certificate.

Sid just went thru this with one of my daughters who moved here. Last week . yes you can do both at the Walton Rd location
You need
1. proof of who you are , Birth cert or a passport
2. SS card
3. Two Proofs of Residential Address
Insurance card, utility bill , deed to house etc

Gather TWO different documents from the following list showing your residential address: (internet printouts or faxes of these documents are acceptable)

Note: Your current driver license or ID card may not be used as proof of residential address. Proof must come from two different types of source.
