We live five miles from the ocean (as the seagull flies), and I swear I can occasionally smell ocean air when I am riding my bike in our neighborhood. Is it my overactive imagination, or can the smell of the ocean actually travel this far inland ? Has anyone else who lives five or more miles from the beach ever experienced this ?

I live five miles from the ocean too. When my sister comes to visit, she always tells me she can smell the ocean.

No, it's just redundant. Brackish water has salt.

An oxymoron would be "government intelligence". Or bureaucratic efficiency. or government worker. Or "government aid", which is a euphemism for taxpayer funded.

I posted the question on Google just to see what would come up. Someone who lives a 30 minute drive from the Ocean at Myrtle Beach posed the same question, saying she could sometimes smell the ocean. Here is the very scientific reply she received, which gives me hope that at only 5 miles away, maybe I really CAN occasionally smell ocean air:

"The smell of the ocean is caused by dimethyl sulfide gas, which is produced by bacterial decay products. The productivity of the bacteria which produce dimethyl sulfide is affected by temperature and the amount of nutrients in the sea water. Summertime at Myrtle Beach would be very productive, so if the wind was right the smell could be carried inland a considerable distance.
I have no idea how far "30 minutes" is, as distances are usually measured in km or miles. Certainly 30 km is not an unreasonable distance for the smell of dimethyl sulfide to be detected by the human nose in the right conditions."

Geesh I figured Northerners who are inland might read this site and and not know what brackish water is. Sorry it offended so many of you.

You think they don't have brackish water north of Florida?
