Hey all,

My girlfriend (27) and I (26) booked a trip from Saturday the 10th of October to Columbus Day for a long weekend getaway and we decided on Portland. We're staying right in the heart of the city and we're wondering what sights to see/things to do that could keep us kids busy for a few days. It'll be our first time there. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

1. Lots of pubs and breweries to visit.

2. Take the ferry to Peaks Island.

3. Make sure to get up to the Eastern Promenade for lots of nice views and trails.

There is a new science museum on the water front, and they are showing the Body Worlds exhibit through December.

Portland is a big foodie town. We are more than seafood. I'd argue that if you only come here for the seafood, you are missing the best restaurants in town. Use OpenTable to set up reservations for many of them in advance to ensure a seat.

There are some great trails in the area. The leaves will probably be at peak for changing.

Do you generally need a restaurant to get a table at a good restaurant on a Saturday night? Maybe just during tourist season? If so, how far in advance do you generally need to make the reservation? Are there hot restaurants that need reservations months in advance?

I have to admit that's one of the appeals compared to Chicago. Chicago has great restaurants, but it seems like you have to plan pretty far in advance to get into many of them. I'm hoping it's easier in Portland.

Depends on the place. For example, Paciarino is very hard to walk into and get a seat. Reservations should be made a day in advance at a minimum for Fridays and Saturdays. Most places though, will have a wait on Thursday - Saturday nights. Generally it is anywhere from 20 - 45 minutes. Some places have a bar which makes waiting easier.

The nice thing about OpenTable is that you can search around to see what is available. It'll give you an idea of what restaurants are really popular too.
