Red face What can you tell me about Falmouth?

As we are getting ready to close on our house in Falmouth what can any of you tell me about Falmouth, regarding the schools, people,...
Where should we go for a night out (with or without the kids)?
Any secrets about the area we should know?
etc,...
Thank you all so much for any and all info!!

Nice Town, it's a bit spread out, no real town center or village. The layout of the town is a bit weird. It has a strip of Generica as we call it with the Wal-Mart and other box stores and chain restaurants on Route one nestled in with some car dealerships.
The schools are good and have just been refurbished or rebuilt in recent years.
Route 88 has some water views if you don't mind looking at the power plant on Cousin's Island. There are a couple of nice boat yards on Route 88 one of which is for sale, as well as the Portland Country Club golf course. A members only club. Route 88 or Falmouth Foreside as it is known locally is also a local speed trap for the unsuspecting. The limit is 35 mph and the police sit in a number of places with radar. As far as a night out is concerned Portland is just minutes away. What ever you feel like doing you can probably find it in Portland.

Falmouth has a variety of retail stores on route 1 including a big name grocery store and a small shopping center on the west side of town with another big name grocery store.
There are 3 private golf clubs that are member only all include pools and tennis. There is a movie theatre and an ice arena. Nice walking trails, one on Mackworth island that is a favorite of the locals with the trail along the bay. Gilsland farm audubon society has a nice trail for walking also. The town landing has moorings for a boat. Portland Yacht club and Handy Boat, boat yard are both on route 88 along with the town landing market. The schools are top ranking with a brand new High School.

Some of the type of shops on Rt 1 are 2 Provision type stores specializing in gourmet deli foods and wines offering, imports and local organic. Bakery, Card shop, Office supply. Major fast food chain stores and drug store. The post office is in the grocery store. There is a wine store specializing in just wine and accessories. Hair salons, a Pub/restaurant that is a favorite of the locals that has a family dining room on one side and a nice pub on the other that has great food and the pub side has a sports pub atmosphere and is a popular place with great food. On Bucknam Road there is a medical
building with great doctors, pediatrics, eyecare, family practice etc. with a lab on site for any necessary labwork needed. Good luck and congratulations on your new home.

You will love Mackworth Island, a gem of an island donated to the State of Maine by Governor Baxter for the establishment of a school for the deaf.

A beautiful perimeter path maintained by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands is open to the public during daylight hours. Visit it all seasons of the year for a real treat

The causeway to Mackworth island washed out last spring. It took them several weeks to rebuild it. They had to close the school for almost a month! I believe everything has been repaired by now ...This isn't New Orleans.
