Thank You Maineah! We stopped into Gritty's when we had visitors from out of town (including a couple of very hungry, teen agers...this past summer....and the food was great and the big tables and pub atmosphere was perfect. I bet I will be stopping in there with my son and his family while they are up from SC over Christmas week.

Excellent! Take a walk down stairs to see the brewery if you haven't done so. The brewer is Andy and he's a real nice guy!

If you want to experience "classic" Portland meals:

lunch - A "regular Italian" sandwich from Amatos on India St.

Seafood is found along any coast, but the "Italian" may be one of Southern Maine's few unique foods

dinner - Dimillo's (Old Port)

Very good "Classic" Portland choices !! For some reason the Italian sandwiches at the original Amatos on India street are far better than the ones at the Amato's in Brunswick!

Definitely the greasiest thing that I have ever eaten. Seriously, the the oil just poured off. I noticed the Amatos in Westbrook has them two for $6.99 right now.

I would choose the Miss Portland Diner over Becky's. The food is the same and half the price.

Maybe we'll hike down there through the snow tomorrow.

Elston, I have never understood the attraction to apple pie and cheddar cheese.... I mean, I understand the origins, etc., but I just don't think it begins to compare to warm apple pie and vanilla bean ice cream. lol When I think cheddar cheese, I think a great english cheddar, some european bread, and a hearty cabernet. YUM!
