West Bath?
Anyone have any first hand information about West Bath? I went to look at a house there today and liked it, at least on first glance. It also seems that the property tax rate is low. Any information is much appreciated :-)

I can help you with West Bath diablogun. Although there isn't a lot to say. I'm sure you realized when you went to look at the place that it's directly between Bath and Brunswick. There are a few little business there. I'm not sure if you have any kids, if so they would attend Bath schools. Shopping could be done in either Bath or at Cooks Corner in Brunswick. There's a little recreational park (Sawyer Park) right on the New Meadows river. West Bath is close in proximity to Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg or Reid State Park in Georgetown. Either place offers nice sandy beaches in the summer. Bath Iron Works is the biggest employer in the area. If your house was east of Rt 1 on or near the Old Bath Rd you might have to deal with traffic from "the yard" at certain times of the day. They run 3 shifts there, although 3rd shift is pretty quiet, not like in the old days when the place was booming. (My dad was a VP there for 18 yrs)
Skillins Greenhouse is right there on the Old Bath Rd, they have a wide variety of planting / growing needs and a nice little gift shop. New Meadows Marina is a nice little place if you're into boating. The New Meadows river empties out in Cundy's Harbor, which is part of Harpswell.
In the winter there are ice races on the river, which is kind of fun to go watch older beat up cars (also souped up cars) race around a track on the ice. I would have to say that there probably isn't any crime in the area due to the lack of business's there. Either side of Rt 1 has some nice areas in which to live. It's also pretty close to Thomas Point beach in Brunswick which is a privately owned public beach, it is tidal though. At low tide you'd be wading out through the mud flats to find water to swim in, which I would not recomend due to the large horseshoe crab population. Although there are many festivals held at Thomas Point as they are also a campground.
Other than that, there isn't much to say. If you have any other specific questions, pls feel free to ask.

Thank you Island, this tells me a lot. I don't have kids yet, but plan to. I thought the area was rather nice, but it was remote. I just put in a offer on the house, but I don't think they will take it. I'll have to wait and see :-)

You never know, depends on how long it's been on the mrkt and how desperate they are. If it's owned by the Whorf's, (as a lot of areas in West Bath are) don't hold your breath. Was it near the river or closer to Bath? Which side of Rt 1?
Best of luck to you, hope they take your offer.

Congrats! I didn't chime in on this thread because I know Jack about West Bath and island mermaid seemed to have you fully informed. I'm glad I checked in though! Congratulations again, I hope you enjoy it!
