What area are the $160K homes? Check out www.hotpads.com too for rentals. You can see on a map where at the rentals are to get a better idea of where you would be in the city

Just go to realtor.com and search with that price range. I am not familiar with these areas, so I could not say unless I searched and posted each one I guess..

there are pockets of SE that are good to live in with good shops and restaurants. these would include Belmont, Sellwood, Hawthorn, Eastmoreland and Laurelhurst. I would still rent first and wait til the housing market bottoms, figure out what area is best for you and then buy

Default Good community and easy trip to Portland

Scappoose and St Helens are old towns straight out a 4-lane highway (not a freeway) to the NW of Portland. Scappoose is an easy 25 minutes to the cultural NW Portland. I drive it often and easily. The towns are mixed character: part bedroom-for-Portland and part small town, and very friendly and easy to get to know. Both have plenty of local shopping and services -- including large super markets - so one does not need to go to Portland for most things. Because of Oregon's progressive land use laws, there are beautiful local farms this close to the city and plenty of local produce and fruit as well as charming flowers and sea food from the coast a bit more than an hour away. I know this area well because I grew up in Oregon and my mother lived in Scappoose for some years. I also know something from personal experience about the housing market (I am not/not a realtor) and I have a beautiful house for sale since my mother passed away some months ago. It is in your price range, is 2280 feet with 3 bdrms, 2 baths, a double garage, and with a magnificent unincumbered, year-round view of two snow peaks - Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood - out across the undevelopable fields from the front of the house. It is serene and beautiful.

All the very best in finding the place you want and with your move.

Giaco

I just took a look at the 160k houses on Realtor.com. Most of them are in South East, South of Stark and almost all the way out Gresham in some cases.

South East in general seems more depressed then other areas, but I wouldn't call any of those neighborhoods really bad. I'd really look at the house itself very closely, and I'd be sure to visit the neighborhood at different times of the day and on the weekends to see how it was.

Although I'd buy this one in heartbeat if I had the cash: The real estate listing at 3035 Southeast 140th Avenue Portland OR - Homes for Sale - MLS #9093500 - Realtor.com®
