I am wondering if anyone has any solid knowledge about elementary teaching jobs in Portland or (very close) surrounding areas. I am currently relocating there due to my husbands job and from what I have found (via online) I am starting to worry if I will even be able to sub. Here's to hoping ya'll have some positive news. . .
Thanks!

Teachers are getting laid off left and right across the state. Again.

A lot of school districts were able to keep most teachers the last couple of years, but with this year's budget shortfalls they're having no choice.

Two years from now when the economy has improved, it will be better. Oregon is pretty good about hanging onto money (we have some in reserve that we have not/will not touch) but as a result we've been making the cuts. However, tax receipts across the country are rebounding and are pretty close to pre-recession levels, so perhaps next year will be better.
That tax receipt increase will happen at the Federal level too, so there should be less pressure on Federal funds.

Basically you're on the wrong end of the cycle. The Federal stimulus put off cuts in government for 1-2 years while the private sector started to recover. Now that money is gone so government is shrinking.

This thread is from years ago, but does anyone have an update on the job market? I have four years of experience teaching middle school English, and I have a certification in Oregon and New York, but I currently teach in Nevada (after moving here from New York to find a job). I'm looking to move next June.

That is a year away. Any answer you get will be different when you need to know the answer.

Generally a lot of schools don't hire new people till August after the vacancies are all filled via transfers. I'm not sure if all districts do this but Portland Public does, so you don't know if you have a job until a few weeks before school starts....

I'd like to be prepared and think ahead, which is why I'm asking. It's good to know that they don't hire til August. I think I'll try applying to schools at least an hour out of the city... I don't mind a long commute. I've been living in NV for 4 years, and I just need to return to the green. I know people in Portland, so it makes sense to try it out.
