It's been mentioned twice in different threads and since I have never been to Alabama, it would be interesting to know what they are.
I live in Alabama currently. My boyfriend and I plan to move to Portland next summer.
In Alabama there are churches everywhere. When you meet someone they ask where you work then which church you go to. If you aren't religious then you are kind of an outcast.
NASCAR and football are king. Everything shuts down during the Alabama/Auburn game.
Wal-Mart is everywhere.
There are few liberals here. Most people I know are very conservative and would picket Planned Parenthood. That could be because I live in the country and I see a lot of Christian and anti-choice bumper stickers.
And like AnotherBravesFan said there are few farmers markets or vegetarian options. This is definitely a meat and potatoes kind of state.
These are just the ones off top of my head.

are these stereotype descriptions of alabama? I am sure certain secitons are very progressive. As I am sure many sections of Portland are very boring and conservative.

Well, college football is very popular in Portland. We like soccer and basketball as well. Many/most ambulatory residents are involved in participation sports and activities.

The other items on the list... polar opposites.

- Healthy eating (except for Voodo Donuts) and exercise, Trader Joe's +++++
- Religion is regarded as a private matter, much as you describe CA.
- Costco is huge, Walmart has a presence in distant suburbs.

Walmart is coming to Portland, and I think that's a great thing. I still don't think this place will turn into an Alabama.

Walmart has been in Portland for a number of years. They're just not as prevalent as elsewhere, and found mostly in the suburbs.

Can I go out on a limb and suggest: That in AL (and most of the country) cyclists/trains/walking are not as tolerated as in Portland? In most places people aren't looking to buy a house in a neighborhood so that they can walk to restaurants and shops.

Unless they live in Chicago, Boston, NYC, Seattle, Philadelphia, SF, LA, Denver, Baltimore, DC etc. Honestly, in most major metros we are starting to see a strong push for better public transportation, new rail/light rail, and a push for more urban/walkable developments. The reality of limited resources (most notably, space) is starting to come into better focus everywhere.
