We are a young and growing family currently living in troutdale and we are looking to buy our first house. I want to move closer to my husbands work in SE Portland near OMSI but I'm having trouble figuring out where to move. I am certain I don't want a fixer-upper and we want something under 200k. I was looking in Milwaukie but I honesty know nothing about the area. I really just want something in a safe friendly area. Is Milwaukie a good place to move right now and is it a good place to raise kids?

Most all my family have, and are, raising their families in Milwaukie, and love it. It's a pretty easy commute to the OMSI area ... barring accidents or road work. And you'll have MAX headed that way soon.

Just thought I would add some input in regards to living in Milwaukie. Milwaukie is a great area to raise a family. Access to the freeways is easy. Schools, even with the recent funding problems are terrific.

My two cents from my own personal experience living in Sellwood. Since I have lived in both Sellwood & Milwaukie I thought I would mention one thing. I found it a huge pain in the behind to get to the grocery store from Sellwood. If you have the money to shop at QFC or New Seasons great...but if you need to get to Fred Meyer or another affordable place to purchase groceries you are going to be driving to Milwaukie all the time.

Agree totally about the shopping situation.

Not to mention, being in Multnomah County will just, in general, be more expensive than Clackamas County. Higher taxes, etc.

I don't think you can find a move-in-ready house in Sellwood for under $200,000. Right now, there are just one house, a big fixer, under $200,000 in Sellwood, and only 2 houses under 300,000.

Milwaukie, on the other hand, has over 100 homes under 200,000, many of them quite nice.

I live in Milwaukie and I love it. Safe, quiet, an easy commute to just about anywhere, and a lot of community.
