I'm driving down from BC for the first time to visit Portland, with a dog. The nice hotels in Portland seem to be 115 a night or so. Are there any nearby towns/hotels you'd recommend I look at?

We use DogFriendly.com® - Pet Travel Guides and City Guides for Dog/Pet Owners to find Dog Friendly Hotels. I know of several in Seattle, and several along the Oregon Coast. But none in or near Portland that I could recommend.

I don't use a guide. Love em or hate em every Motel 6 will accept a dog. We plan our road trips around those motels. They are cheap, some are better than others. The Motel 6 in Gold Beach Oregon was one of the best places ever for dog friendly. (best bed in a motel 6 ever) They have good staff. The owner/manager was attentive and keeps a good eye on the place. You will give up things for dog friendly. If you want the Hilton leave poochy home.

Reserve a room online and save some $$$.

When we moved, we had an extended stay at the Oxford Suites in Gladstone. Very dog-friendly, lots of good places to walk nearby, good free breakfast, and close to Portland.
