Kind of interesting (http://www.slate.com/id/2173729/pagenum/all/ - broken link)

Ask a musician why they relocated to Portland and, from Britt Daniel on down, the most common response is: "We came through on tour and I thought it was awesome." It might not be enough to lure the glitterati, but Portland's combination of affordability, natural beauty, and laid-back weirdness is an independent artist's dream.

I'm a big supporter of independent music of all types and styles and I agree that the "so called weirdness" and liberal vibe has a magnetic effect on many people. In my experience the more people are free to live how they choose the more they will enjoy life. It's when you have constant conflicts/clashes that take away from the pleasure and freedom. However, people will still stereotype others based on the type of music they listen to and how they dress. There's consequences to everything....
