Not looking for starbucks, or starbucks type places, but an old fashioned CHEAP coffee shop..Maybe a tiny diner with really cheap coffee or at least free refills.. Heavy coffee drinker, but not expensive(tight budget).. Any suggestions of places like this?

I don't know about "cheap," but the Roxy tolerates people who sit there for a long time just drinking coffee. Just realize that it's a Gay hotspot of sorts, and the owner is quite buddy buddy with the local cops to get rid of trouble makers.

No, The Roxy is on SW Stark. Just a few blocks from Powells.

There's McDonald's on the corner of 6th and Main. A regular cup of coffee is cheap and if they are not busy, they do allow peope to hang around for extended periods of time.

Really? Mcdonalds? Are you kidding? All over america there are small little diners or coffee shops that HAVEN'T inflated their prices to starbucks status, especially if they just have REGULAR coffee available.. I used to hang out at 2 small diners in Richmond, Virginia alone, one of them is called "third street diner" I'd buy one cup of coffee (cost 1$) in a back booth(usually on quiet nights or so late most people have gone home, it was 24 hours), and hang out until 4am with free refills, since the waitresses had very little to do at that time, then I'd usuallly tip a buck for them.. Needless to say, back then, I was averaging 25 cups a day of coffee.. So, no little CHEAP diners in portland? Is that what your saying?

Look, people are just trying to help you. No need to be belligerent because you don't like the answers they have.

I used to buy coffee for a quarter. Those days have gone. Reality bites.

No place in Portland is going to pour 10 cups of coffee for a buck. Good beans are going to cost 30 cents a cup, and by the time you have two refills they are just breaking even. Also, cheap and downtown don't go together any more. If you want cheap coffee, buy yourself a coffee pot and a couple of quart thermos bottles.
