One thing to factor in when moving is how well salaries relate to the COL of wherever you are thinking of moving. I think of all your choices, Minnesota does that the best.

As I've said, Utah and Idaho beat Oregon in unemployment. But I'd rather push a broom in Portland than work in a call center in Idaho. I shouldn't be TOO judgmental about Idaho, but the White Aryans love the place, so I don't know that I would be comfortable there.

Sometimes living in a dream location can totally jump start someone and make all the difference. Kudos to them for making it happen.

COL is all well and good if making money is a number one priority. For me, Quality of Life factors in there a bit higher.

Cost of living might be similar. However, what is the quality of life? I hear it's good. However, what about Portland? I hear it's even better there.

I think they are both excellent places to live. Better of course would be in the eye of the beholder. I really like both Portland and Minneapolis very much.

green_mariner: The advice I have given others, which would be appropriate in your situation, is to find a job with an employer in your local area who also has employees in Portland... then transfer after 6-12 months. That is long enough to build a good work record such that you look better to the receiving manager than hiring someone who needs training.

This is true even if you have no intention of making that job your career. Once you are here you can then seek other opportunities and can build a network.

I think that is going to be the hardest part. I know of local employers that have employees in Wisconsin(Kimberly Clark). Also, my expertise is in cartography/GIS. That field tends to be more localized than most fields. I don't know any companies in the Atlanta area that have employees in Oregon.

Have you contacted this firm? https://toc.taleo.net/careersection/...3&src=JB-10100

Lake Oswego is a Portland suburb.

This job is in Medford. Not where you ultimately want to be but a heck of a lot closer than Atlanta: http://agency.governmentjobs.com/jac...b&jobID=519528

I have lived in Seattle and spent some time in Portland. Myself personally, I do not get the allure of Portland....maybe it is the pierced-nose, hippy, emo thing???

Seattle, yes....ten times nicer than Portland.

I am now living in Spokaneadelphia....many tweaked out zombies stealing stuff....but still pretty nice and the cost of living is half of Portland or Seattle.
