Hey everyone! Hope all is well!

As amazing as the food scene in Portland is (Sooooo much better than Salt Lake), I haven't been able to find any Sushi places here that were great. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've been to a couple of places but most of their rolls just loaded up with rice and cream cheese, and most were tempura, which I just don't consider sushi.

Anyways, stay awesome pdx and I'd love to know where to find the sushi goods!

I'm curious about this too. The stuff you speak of that is loaded up with stuff is the Americanized version to suit our palates. The more genuine sushi is kinda hard to come by. If anyone knows of good sushi eats in Portland that would be awesome.

My recommendation is out in Beaverton... Ikenohana

It's a little hole-in-the-wall joint in a strip mall, but it's (IMHO) the best damned sushi joint on the planet - it's usually packed on Friday/Saturday nights, and getting a seat at those times takes a ton of patience.

I'll reiterate what I said in that thread and add a few more.

For very authentic sushi: Restaurant Murata(Close to what you'd get in Japan-Downtown Portland)
For some of the freshest and best choices of fish and unique rolls: Bamboo Sushi (SE Portland)
For splurging on really high quality sushi: Yama(Pearl District)
For very filling and large pieces but still good quality sushi: Saburo's in Westmoreland(SE Portland)
For a really cheap sushi fix, but still good: Sushi Takahashi (SW 5th near PSU)

Koji Osakaya locations are usually pretty reliable for good sushi and other Japanese dishes and fairly authentic in terms of taste--the one downtown near Pioneer Square is good, but there are locations all around Portland. Masu's(Downtown) and Yoko's(SE Portland) are good as well, but are sort of places for more unique rolls and fusion style Japanese food. And I still haven't been there, but everyone seems to rave about Syun Izakaya in downtown Hillsboro.

Random_Walk, just had Ikenohana for lunch and I was impressed. More tables in there than I was expecting, and $7.95 for 2 hand rolls, soup & salad is a great deal for non-train sushi. Close by for me, too. Thanks for the tip! I never would have seen the place.

No worries

I stumbled across it when I first moved up to Oregon (I was actually looking for something else - forgot what, though). I sort of make it a point to get there whenever I'm in the neighborhood and hungry at the same time.

I can agree w/ the original poster though... in Salt Lake City, there are only two sushi joints that are even edible (Ichiban and Kyoto), but they're pricey beyond belief.

When they serve sake, can they bring it right to you, or do they have to walk behind a translucent barrier and then hand it to you around the side?
