My husband and I currently live and work in Dallas, TX. We want to get out and I recently received a job offer at a company in Portland. I absolutely LOVE the position, company and Portland and would go in a heartbeat except for ...

The new job is a raise but not enough to absolve my husband of not needing to work,
He's in tech (.NET stack windows development, maintenance/defects/bug fixing is his strong suit) and he's worried he will have a difficult time getting a job,
He's placed his resume out on Indeed and Monster and has tried applying to some positions found on Craigslist but has very minimal bites.

We have been trolling the web for what the market is like and there seems to be an even number of recent complaints from employers/recruiters about there being a lack of people and from potential employees about there being a lack of positions.

Please, locals with a knowledge of the current tech market, any advice on this would be very appreciated!!! Is he maybe not getting much interest because his number is a dallas number? Or is it likely he will struggle to find something?

Thank you so much for reading this and offering any insight!!!

Portland is all about Open Source in the IT community. There are .Net developer positions but they're rarer then other languages.... unless you're talking about Fortran or Pascal. He'd have a much easier time up north in Seattle in the Land of Microsoft.

If he has any other skills, emphasize them more on the resume and start brushing up on them. Especially if it's Linux Admin, Ruby, JAVA, or iOS development.

Keep in mind that Portland is heavy into personal networking for the job market, especially in the IT world. Companies get so many resumes that most of them get tossed out unless they're flagged by someone who already works there.

I'll ask around to see if anyone is hiring for .Net developers, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Good news is that the Employment Department has a networking group just for IT people. You can find the specifics on their website.
