i'm a 23 year old student thinking about transfering to Portland for university. I was wondering if there were any art districts in the area. Hopefully similar to the silverlake/echopark/los feliz areas of los angeles. I don't know Portland at all, so it would be nice to live in an area that has mom and pop eateries, bookstores, music and galleries. I would either be living on my own or with roomates and would rather avoid driving my car if I could. I also don't want to live in a heavily populated college age area, meaning no dorms. I'd rather live around more mature humans whose goal for the weekend isn't one binge drinking blur. Don't get me wrong, I like to drink and have fun, but I'm definitly not the frat/sorority type of gal. I'd rather be bbqing at home, playing some old time tunes with friends.

Also I was wondering about work in Portland as well. I've been a manager for a small boutique and waitress for two family restaurants. Is it easy to find work as a waitress in Portland in some small cafe?

Your help would be appriciated! Thank you!

Art districts? In Portland? Nope, nada!

(try using google)

There really aren't much in the way of colleges with dorms, besides Reed and UP in NoPo. Although since they are private schools with actual campuses and small student bodies, they don't really impact the neighborhoods much at all.

NW 23rd, The Pearl District, Hawthorne, Mississippi and Alberta are up and coming...

Depending on what college you are attending, you may need your car.
