So, yeah, received a job offer. They want me to get there asap. I'm moving from Eugene. I currently rent a nice little two bedroom house with a fenced yard. Looks like the minimum I can look forward to paying for that in PDX is about $1100. That's about as much as I want to pay. I have two well-behaved dogs, but they are pit mixes. I can provide a reference from two previous landlords - no complaints about the dogs ever and no damage. They're both licensed with the City, and I bet you could call Animal Control to ensure they've never received any complaints - and my vet can attest to the fact that they're up to date on their shots. I also carry renter's insurance that covers both of my dogs for any damage (to a person, not property) up to $150,000. I am a responsible pet owner, I swear!

Looks like all the property management companies have a policy against certain breeds. Anyone have any advice there? I want to buy eventually, but the boyfriend does not have a job offer yet, so we can't really look at buying until we have a better idea what his commute will look like.

I am working in the Lloyd district so it seems like I can get a bus in from anywhere. I have a car, but would prefer to use transit or bike.

Also, any tips on good, cheap internet and cable providers?

Your best bet is to watch Craigslist for a private landlord. Rentals are tough right now as it is. Are they obviously pit? Get a pet resume going with all your references and present it to the landlord when you apply. It may help.

As for cheap cable/internet...comcast has a monopoly here and it's definitely not cheap.

Yep. A couple of pitties. I'll have to look up what a pet resume is - never heard of that!

Comcast has a monopoly down here too, so I guess we'll stick with them.

Thanks!

The Meadow Ridge Apartments in Beaverton, right next to Nike Campus, currently has vacancies and a sign that says "no breed/size restrictions!"

Its not just Pitts, Portland and its suburbs appear to be very anti dog/animal. I am looking to move back up there from CA and I cannot believe how many of the home rentals in Tigard, Beaverton, Hillsboro and Lake Oswego said no dogs or even no pets. Whats the deal? The other areas I was looking at like Dallas, Vegas and Phoenix had no issue with pets.

The deal is Portland has less than a 3% vacancy rate and landlords can pick and chose as to whom they rent their apartments and houses. Dallas, Vegas and Phoenix do not have this situation. I have had an increasingly difficult time finding places that would rent to me because of my having a cat or two over the years and in the past that wasn't as much as a problem as dog owners had.

I guess from a landlord's point of view, it is easier to take a chance with renters not having pets than having them. From my experience as renter of over 30 years, it has been the apartments managed by larger rental companies that have allowed my cats but everyone's experiences seem to be different.

As and example, the larger buildings around me allow small dogs, up to two to an apartment I believe, and cats. They are managed by a large real estate management company but are owned by one person. My building is owned and managed by one person who allows only up to two cats per apartment. My point is, don't reject a place just because it is managed by a large real estate company because it could be a situation like the first I described.

To the OP, $1,100 will get you a studio maybe a small one bedroom apartment in the Lloyd District or anywhere in the core city. That doesn't sound like it will be room enough for your dogs. I think you might be heading for the farther reaches of Portland or the suburbs for something larger.

Portland is very dog-friendly -dogs are everywhere. (Also, unfortunately, so are little plastic bags of poop that dog owners don't feel like throwing in the garbage. But they are even polite about that - in NYC, they just let the dogs go straight on the sidewalk without picking it up and putting it in a bag).

Thanks! I'm not looking to live in Lloyd - I am okay with being farther out. I'd prefer to still be in Portland, but if I have to go to the burbs for a yard, I'll do it. My dogs are okay with apartment life, one is a total couch potato, but I really prefer that they have a yard. I prefer that I have a yard too. I like having green space!

Look in Rockwood around 181st and Sandy. A lot of older rental homes with yards.
