I'm planning a weekend trip to Portland and am looking for recommendations. I'm into history stuff and architecture/art and would also like to find some cool old-school bars/restaurants (think red leather booths, wood paneling and martinis). I'm staying at either the Benson or Heathman hotel and wasn't planning to rent a car so mainly looking for places I can walk/cab. Thanks!

Old school bars and restaurants downtown? The Ringside Steakhouse(they have a good happy hour in the lounge after 9:30), Jake's Crawfish(touristy but a Portland classic), Huber's(oldest place in Portland and famous for Spanish coffee), and the Driftwood Room at the Hotel Deluxe(could be on Mad Men). Those are the ones that first come to mind and they're all pretty close to the Benson or Heathman for walking--Ringside is a little further up Burnside, but still walkable. Actually the bars in the Heathman and Benson are great for that sort of vibe as well, I like the lounge/restaurant at the Heathman for happy hour.

If you like jazz, Jimmy Mak's is the best jazz joint in town and Portland Prime has Saturday night jazz as well.

In addition to the above and if the weather is right, a walk down NW 23rd at about 4-5PM can be nice. I suggest desert at Papa Haydens.

Thanks for some great suggestions. Huber's looks awesome. And I completely forgot to ask about jazz. You read my mind.

Though it's been a while since I've been there, one of my all-time favorite restaurant/bar for atmosphere (and great food, drinks) is Cassidy's, at 13th & Washington.

I like Higgins, too.

And don't forget you'll have easy access to the MAX and streetcar lines, if you want to venture out of the immediate downtown.

For a mix of architecture & history, you may be interested in venturing across the river (it's on the streetcar line) to the Architectural Heritage Museum.

And don't miss the Old Town area, and the cast-iron buildings there. You might want to check out some of Pietro Belluschi's work. And, of course, the ever controversial Portland Building (I happen to love it ... others, not so much).
