Portland is an odd choice for a vacation if you don't like hipsters and weirdos.

one of your days...(2 hr RT + visit / hike / picture time)
Early Morning round trip to the Gorge (East on SR14 (WA), near Airport) to Bridge of the Gods, then westbound on Oregon Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway past waterfalls and trails. Light lunch at Edgefields (Troutdale).

Same or another day... (2 hr RT + time there)
Early afternoon head to Coast for several hours Cannon Beach for roaming around shopping / beach + Hug Point State Park (3 miles south) for sunset (Excellent colors in the fall)
https://www.google.com/search?q=hug+...w=1536&bih=866

Eats in PDX...
Food trucks (there are 3 - 4 main areas with many trucks each for variety)
Happy Hour (I like Jake's Crawfish (historic restaurant / setting) for HH near Powell Books)

places to visit...
Real Mother Goose (excellent handmade Oregon / regional materials and artisans) (near Jake's / Powell Books) More than 900 artists show their work at our block-long gallery. — The Real Mother Goose Art Gallery
Powell Books (great for late at night / after dark, check for author 'readings' / presentations)
Washington Park is nice in evening (sunset over the city / mtn hood highlighted in the sunset reflection),
Saturday Market (under Burnside Bridge).
I really like browsing The Joinery (Woodstock store) custom furniture

Other interesting stores (used building supplies) that are Portland Unique is "The Rebuilding Center, Hippo Hardware, and Rejuvenation"

LOTS of great Portland Parks! (check for free concerts and events)
There usually is a Labor Day Concert (Sept 4) / fireworks event on Waterfront (Oregon Symphony)
https://www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/

have a great time,

Is this a visit, or a relocation search?

Do some history research on these areas, it is interesting, (Such as Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway designed in the 1930's specifically for viewpoints / enjoyment of terrain, rather than 'commute efficiency') http://columbiariverhighway.com/

Great documentaries available on each area.

Seattle... on a rainy day... see the 'Klondike' National Park Exhibit (near lower downtown) very interesting.
Chittenden Locks. http://www.nws.usace.army.mil/Missio...ttenden-Locks/
Pike Place Market (on a weekday at noon)

"jk" is for joke, lol.

OP you are earlier planning your personal trip than the fair organizers are, but the Oregon State Fair in Salem is usually around this timeframe so check for that-

If the OP wants to avoid hipsters and weirdos, he had better steer clear of downtown. Unfortunately, that's where a lot of good stuff is.

How many with you?
Where are coming from?
Where will you going to afterwards?
Do you drink? Eat shellfish? Spicy foods?
Do you carry?
