We are a family of 6 moving to Portland in at the end of May. I understand that Portland is broken up into sections per neighborhood. My question is, does anyone have any ideas of what would be considered a great area for raising a big family. I guess while we're at it does anyone know of any particular avenues (been searching Craigslist and the Oregonian) that I could take to find a rent? Our cutoff rental budget is 2000 per month. Thanks for your input.

How many bedrooms do your six require?

The six consists of my wife and I, our 2 daughters, and our 2 sons. We could most definitely make do with a 3 bedroom.

Where you are going to work is critical. We have great public transportation but we haven't built any new roads in a few decades. We have traffic problems. You will want to try to live and work on the same side of the river and preferably in the same quadrant of Portland.
We have a new bridge going across the Willamette River for public transit and emergency vehicles only. The Max (thats the name of our train) may well become the fastest way to get in and out of the city during rush hours.

Anyway, the important thing is where is your work located.

Oh, and price range is important. Are you planning on renting or buying? There is a lot of information on these threads that should give you some ideas. I'd say jobs would be the main determining factor as well.

gypsydoc, we have plans to rent and don't want to spend more than 2000 in rent per month.

I would say try padmapper, put in what it is that you want and see where rentals pop up, then you could ask about more specific areas. If you work in North Portland, somewhere in North or Northeast would probably be good.

Just a quick look on Trulia and I found several houses in the NW and North for around $1500/month with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bedrooms
