Oh yeah go anywhere in North Portland and it's after 10 PM? You're SCREWED if you can't afford a taxi.

Don't look now, but St Johns is gentrifying.

I happen to like TriMet very much. I made it my business to live very close (like a few steps) to a good frequent bus line; I also have a not-quite-as-frequent but still good bus line that stops out front and takes me in a different direction from the other one. The frequent line comes every 15 minutes or better, during rush hours about every 5-7 minutes. Next month the bus will come every 15 minutes into the evening hours. I can't think of anywhere much I'd want to go on the bus late at night. I can do everything I need to do within the 2-hour window a $2.50 ticket gives me.

When I first moved to this side of town I was still hanging onto using the Zipcar now and then. I rationalized keeping my membership by thinking, "What if I had an emergency and had to go somewhere late at night when the bus doesn't run?" However, if it was that much of an emergency that late at night, I'd likely not be in any shape to drive and if I didn't need 911 I'd call a cab, so I dropped the Zipcar.

TriMet, like any institution run by human beings, is not perfect. But I think it's pretty great, and is a large reason why I moved to Portland in the first place. So any wah-wah-wah about TriMet falls on deaf ears, as far as I'm concerned. Be glad we have a good system here!

That just isn't true. Though a cab ride isn't really that expensive if you need one, but transit does operate after 10 pm in North Portland.

Maybe in some places but I've been stranded up there before.

I can't speak about your personal experiences and which choices you made.
