I read many differing opinions on what Portland people are like. There's a lot of people who say Portlanders are a bunch of rude, cliquey, dismissive hipsters who, despite claims of being tolerant and open, are the exact opposite.

On the other hand, I've also read that Portland people are friendly, open, and upbeat.

So what's more accurate, the former or the latter?

PS - I realize this is a generalization and you can't really define the personality of a population, I'm just asking for the vibe compared to other places you've lived. It's all relative, and I realize that.

All over the map. My neighbor is Bush voting redneck. My other one is a liberal uptight despicable selfish woman. .

Vibe in general? Kinda phony. They are just normal car-driving, mortgage paying nine to fivers but claim their poop doesn't smell.

oh, I bike everywhere. I'm a minimalist. (drives 2015 Subaru Outback)
I buy local produce, farm to table. (buys produce at Fred Meyer)
I love how close portland is to the coast. (Hasn't been to the coast in four years)
I love how close the hiking trails are (hasn't been hiking in two years)
the MAX is amaaaaaazing (rode the MAX once, seven years ago, on New Year's Eve)
I love how the bus stops every 15 minutes right outside my door (has never been on a trimet bus.)
I'm car-free (freeloads other people's car 2-3 times a week. Freeloads rides)
I buy all my books at Powell's (buys all books on Amazon.)

Yeah, I was kinda skeptical when I read that Portland is where "young people retire". That either means you're a trustfund kid, a successful entrepreneur, a freeloader, or scraping to get by with a PT job. I'm guessing most are the latter.

I think the people who say Portlanders are friendly and upbeat are either lucky in their interactions with people, just visited and had a good time, or are rude snobby hipsters themselves and blind to the anti-sociality that plagues this entire region.

Lmao, so true and very accurate. I wish I could visit the coast more often as it is indeed amazing, but unfortunately it's very hard to get there without a car. Sometimes it feels more like 600 miles away rather than just 60.

It depends on the person and who you talk to and interact with. I have typically found people to be friendly and very helpful here.

They got #2 right on that one. I was in the Milwaukie Lowe's yesterday for perhaps ten minutes, and saw three different people w/dogs. In the Clackamas Safeway last week, I bumped into a lady who had a Chihuahua in her baby seat of her cart.
