While the relationship between Nike and the State are hardly cordial, there's just no way that Nike can leave the state. It would be a horrible business decision to move because the benefits just do not outweigh the costs. They aren't going to move just because of a few nutso environmental regulations and a poor business climate: they're so global that it hardly makes an impact.

Likewise, the state would be crazy to let them go. It's like a wrestling match: no one is getting pinned, but the side with the best moves and technique wins.

I am not sure what time period it was, sometime in the late 90s or early 2000 period, but there was quite a bit of animosity between Oregon government officials and Nike. Especially, during the period when it was discovered how Nike was operating sweatshops overseas where the workers were exposed to dismal, almost slave-like conditions. Indeed, study your history, Sir/Madam. Did you go to University of Oregon? Do you remember when the university petitioned to remove the name "Knight" from the "Knight Library". Also, Phil Knight was one of the major contributors to the University of Oregon campus. They also for a time, out of protest, stopped accepting any funding from Phil Knight and Nike corporation. I have been out of the loop for a while and it appears Oregon stopped grinding the axe to use on Mr. Knight. I guess Oregon realized it shouldn't bite the hand that feeds it.

As I said, Phil Knight stays in Oregon because of his loyalty to his home. Oregon keeps Phil Knight because its own radicalism has caused it more grief and problems than it can handle. Even left-wing radical socialist governments know that there is only so far they can go when their paycheck is on the line, despite the ethics of the party.

Maybe, you should speak for yourself... I don't live in Oregon anymore anyway, because I am the victim of its draconian/fascist style taxation system. Think about it, giant corporations working with the government can operate freely, whereas smaller businesses are chased out because they cannot survive the onslaught. Obviously, the government receives kickbacks and benefits from it personally or there is no feasible way they would let free, tax-exempt enterprise operate under its midst. As far as small struggling businesses, takes one to know one!! If I lived in Oregon right now with my income as an independent contractor, I would probably need to apply for food stamps.
I was born at Good Sam hospital back in 1958 lived here all my life except for 4 yrs back in DC and 1 yr in Louisiana.

I'm sure that is what wacko govt bureaucrats in Salem assume too.

Push liberal, high cost, high tax agendas hard enough though and companies will move. Happening in NY, CN, NJ and IL right now. Companies are moving to TX and have been for decades.

You make the point that NIKE is an int'l corporation. Oregon is not essential to company's survival and indeed probably decreases bottom line because of Knights loyalty to his home. He is stepping down now and will not be around forever. The Board of Directors may feel a lot different once he's gone.

If companies leave, rents will go down.

No one's really talked about that in conjunction with the UO, but I have to think Knight's impermanence on this earth is a threat to their status as a high roller as well. I'm sure he's made some provision for the UO in his estate, but that's probably already committed on the books.

Not the only driver of their growth, certainly, but the bankroll and flash he provided have certainly been a key component of how they've funded and marketed their rise to national prominence.

Pretty much, we tend to see this over exaggeration often when talking about the Portland economy as if it is 1970s Puget Sound with Boeing.

That's just the way this forum seemingly has always been.

Try this little experiment:

Go to the main Portland Forum page and sort the threads by either the most "Views" or the most "Replies".

See a trend?

I don't know if that is still the case. Where not too long ago, I-205 was smooth sailing and I-5 was a parking lot, now 205 backs up as well, especially if you are trying to get on to 14. Rush "hour" on I-5 is easily from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. Most of my social life takes place in Portland and most evenings around 4:00 - 5:00 when I'm heading that way, I think "Thank God I'm not heading north!" regardless of which bridge I'm on.

I met my friend for dinner the other night and told her I fear for the future of this city. Looking at Mapquest now, it would take me 11 minutes to go the 8.27 miles between work and the restaurant where we met. It took me 45, and that was going "against" traffic, leaving Vancouver around 4:45. Whenever I head across the river now, I give myself at least an hour, if not an hour and a half to get there on time.
