I think some people would be surprised at what a hassle it is to have people, particularly total strangers, inflicting all manner of casseroles on them in the aftermath of a tragedy -- not many people really want strangers showing up on their doorsteps with meals or hounding them to let them wash their car or mow their lawns.

YM is right, give $. A show of community support never hurt anyone, btw.

Anyone wishing to donate can do so here:

I'll leave the casseroles to the fabulous Nick Z. The survivors won't be going hungry.

Horrific, had nightmares last night, what to do if targeted. Plus found out that one of the victims is of a family that we know. Awful. SO close to home. I guess pepper spray is warranted....

(I was thinking I just walk around in shorts and flip flops, how is that going to help anyone if the perpetrator is prepared to slit your throat?!!!)

I know and this comes right after a man threatened to kill members at the Eugene Islamic Center this month. We saw a cell phone video of the confrontation online and he swung and hit one of our friends in the chest during his insults. Police say officers arrested man who threatened Eugene Islamic Center worshipers | KVAL

It scared a lot of people we know there but thankfully he was found and arrested by police later. Still with Ramadan coming and the increased threats people felt were concerning so the MSA at the University started a go fund me campaign to increase the security at the Eugene Islamic Center. https://www.gofundme.com/mosques-sec...10f7b206f8410c

I felt really terrible for them and now this same thing occurs in Portland on the eve of Ramadan and two men are dead with one other hospitalized. I read the third stabbing victim had his jaw broken during the incident and the guy used a 4-5 inch knife.

This is exactly why this nazi white supremacist hatred needs to be denounced. Already it's starting with "he was mental or on drugs" but I urge you not to look away and dismiss it. It's gotten international attention and the world is watching us. To answer the question why meet and hold a vigil this is why. The community needs to come together to discuss and address it in order to write the social contract moving forward. This kind of tragedy needs to be nipped in the bud by our public officials at the highest office before it further escalates on a national level or this white supremacist group may become more emboldened.

There have been many recent great debates on social media about were Nazis have been involved in Portland such as the 82nd Ave of Roses Parade. These debates in my eyes reveals the shocking fact that many otherwise upstanding citizens apparently have not yet picked up on what nazism is and what it wants in 2017.

There are many voices that eventually refer to free speech. Wishing Nazis could speak freely and March in the public domain with them. When there is already a time and a place they can and have assembled to do just that. Such as this attacker did after the last parade a few weeks before this incident. These people seem to think "unpleasant speech" like nazism must be tolerated, and that such opinions can best be fought in an open debate. They seem to think of the Nazis' right to speak freely as more important than the minorities right to protection against harassment, threats, and physical harm to their health. Knowing that violent words can lead to violent actions as we have just witnessed with this stabbing on the train in Portland.

Such a warm resistance against nazism is in my eyes not only naive but lethal. Nazism is not just "an opinion among other opinions", but an ideology of racial genocide. It was the "ethnic purification" of Europe, of all "Non-Aryans", homosexuals, Gypsies, socialists etc. Which is fascist ideology. It's final destination behind their totalitarian walls: a racist terrorist dictatorship and their aim was the entire world.

Their history has happened. Their actions are unforgivable. Nazism isn't an opinion. It went down in history as a crime against humanity. In light of the millions of people nazism sent to death is it not interesting to find people still agree and sympathize with the neo-Nazis, or as they're currently recoined the alt-Right in the States? Lest we remember our past are we to repeat the Death Camps as their consequence again? We should already know more than enough to deny them further spreading their violent discourse.

Ah, here we go! I wondered when someone was going to bring in Trump's name.

It's the politician's job to divide us. Jill Stein is no exception. We don't have to listen to it though.

This is only one of a few threads I have ever started here on CD and my intent was to inform, support and spread some kind of peace after such a tragedy. I was in NYC after 9/11 and was part of a community that pulled together and showed so much love. I feel that here right now and am in awe of the many people who showed such bravery and compassion including the young man that chased the murderer so he wouldn't get away. I am sitting with this and reminded of what community is.

There is another thread here already started where you can argue and bring up politics. This thread had a distinct purpose and I am thankful to regular posters here who left really helpful and informative commentary.

Thanks to all of the respectful CDers in Portland Forum.

Why shouldn't his name be brought into it? Did the assailant say he was a Hillary supporter? Thinking people trying to get their heads around the increase in domestic sectarian violence and hate speech should ignore the obvious, and speculate wildly in pointless directions to spare the feelings of those aligned with Donald Trump? Uh... no. Since when has that been the way we roll? Own it. This incident and incidents like it are a symptom of a shift in social consciousness away from a PC veneer that kept the worst of anti-social rhetoric and violence bottled up inside the hateful.
