You can check out the school info on the PPS website. Arleta elementary isn't the best in terms of test scores or parental involvement, though I believe the parental involvement portion has improved a lot over the last few years. There are other schools within the area that are much better--Woodstock elementary is an example. If you go to the PPS website you can also look at the boundaries for each school so you can try to buy within the area for a school you like (or avoid for those you don't).
Mt. Scott community Center is great--amazing pool, lots of great classes, etc.

Thanks oldtin!

yeah - we were really attracted to the Woodstock school. Its less then a mile from our new house but outside our zone. Does anyone know if our child would be able to transfer in case Arleta seems a little off on what we are looking for..? We do support keeping our kids in our neighborhood school but you never know...

We love the fact they offer a Mandarin Chinese Program at Woodstock.

You can apply for a transfer but the transfer closing date for next year was in Feb. The Mandarin program is really popular but you have to enter in K. Otherwise, on the PPS website you can look at how many "regular" spots Woodstock had this year by grade for general transfer. When I first moved to Portland 9 years ago we lived a few blocks from Arleta and it was not a school I'd send my child to THEN. I think the area has changed a lot since then and there are a lot more involved parents, and the school probably has a lot more to offer. Arleta and the whole Foster-Powell neighborhood is in flux and changing but still has some areas that are beat down and some problems typical of an area that has (or had) a lot of poverty. I still go to the Mt. Scott Community Center sometimes. It's really cool for kids--they even have a skating rink in the basement of the center. Mt. Scott Park is nice too and they have some great summer activities. Woodstock park is great too. I don't know when you're moving, but if you'll be here this summer check out the Portland Parks website as they have some great free summer programs in the parks with wading pools, arts and crafts, etc. I know many people have moved to Arleta and Woodstock (and Brentwood Darlington) because they've been priced out of other more popular areas, so things will probably continue to change there quickly.
