I'm doing research for a class of mine and we're trying to find out many things including what cities and states do people come from the most who visit Portland,OR.

If you can provide me with answers and websites that would be great. Like the top 5 cities or states that visit Portland,OR.

#1 is Vancouver, Washington to avoid sales tax.

I'll throw in some statistics. I'm involved in a small (rather esoteric) museum. So we're probably not the best cross-section. But ... I tallied the guestbook from the previous 12 months for you. Know that this is very unscientific. It doesn't represent numbers of people, but rather guestbook entries. The percentage represents the percentage of non-Oregon signers.

16.63% were from California
12.04% were from Washington
8.97% were from Florida
4.60% each were from New Jersey & New York
3.06% from Texas
2.84% from Ohio
2.63% were from Illinois
2.41% each from Georgia & Louisiana
2.19% from Pennsylvania
1.97% from South Carolina
1.75% each from Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Virginia
1.53% each from British Columbia, North Carolina & Tennessee
1.31% each from Kansas & Minnesota
1.09% each from Arizona & Connecticut
.88% each from Hawaii, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming
.66% each from Kentucky, Maryland, MEXICO, Mississippi, Montana, Ontario, SERBIA, and Wisconsin
.44% from AUSTRALIA
.22% each from Alaska, Arkansas, BRAZIL, DC, ENGLAND, GERMANY, ITALY, JAPAN, Maine, North Dakota, Newfoundland, Rhode Island, SCOTLAND.

It was interesting (to me, anyway) to note that the winter months were when most of the Washington visitors came. Many fewer in the summer months.

The top cities from which people visited were (in descending order):
Vancouver
Seattle
San Francisco
Los Angeles

Outside of the obvious being Vancouver, WA, my completely unscientific vote would be California, specifically the San Francisco bay area and Los Angeles. Portland has gotten a lot of good press and there is a lot of talk about Portland in the larger cities to the south. And from just driving around town, other than Washington, I see more California plates than any other state.
