My husband and I are looking to re-locate to Oregon. Currently he is on the NYC fire dept and is looking into the Portland Fire Department. I am also looking to teach in/near the Portland area. We are looking for a area that has a college, a strong sense of community, trails, fishing, with relitive home prices ranging from 250's-315. We would also like to be near Portland but not in Portland. We were thinking of looking into McMinnville, but have not other general areas of current knowledge. Could someone please help us with indentifying other areas? We have no children yet, but still want to live in a respectful community, perhaps something similiar to a college town. Thank you!

Hello,
Not sure if it's too far from Portland for you, but Corvallis might be an area to look into. It's about 80 miles from Portland. Great college town, and still affordable from what I've seen online. Good luck.

You should look at Foret Grove. It is a small college town. I believe the population is approx. 15,000. You are very close to good fishing and hiking. Forest Grove is far enough away from Portland to feel small town but close enough to enjoy the big town benefits. You can expect a commute time of about one hour to Portland during rush hour. Not bad if your husband only has to do it once every three days. I dont think you would have any trouble finding teaching jobs here but I dont know alot about that. Look up the web sites for the cities nearby (Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Beaverton, Cornelius) to get an idea of teaching opportunities. As far as homes, you should be able to afford a nice place for that price range. You can expect to have cloudy, gloomy, drizzly weather approx. 8-9 months out of the year but the remaining 3-4 months can't be beat. Good Luck.
