Hi. I'm looking for some suggestions from Portland locals who would best be in the know. Does anyone have any recommendations for the most affordable neighborhoods in Portland in decent areas? Basically I'm looking for neighborhoods where buying or renting would be reasonable (at least by Portland standards), but still be in fairly nice and safe neighborhood. Being able to catch public transit from the neighborhood and would be a plus (as would nearby shopping/eating/social options).

What's affordable? What you can afford where you are may be different from what you can afford here. Salaries are often lower in Portland than in other places. You probably should be more specific in the price range invwhich you are looking.

Depends on what is "affordable", St. Johns I would consider cheap for the area that's not out in the suburbs...but it's piece mail where I would say it's decent. Some areas are cleaned up, some are pretty industrial so keep an eye out for what's around you.

Affordable
Thanks so far for the replies. St. John's sounds like a good suggestion. By affordable, I mean not overpriced for Portland real estate (or rental prices) or i.e. places where locals (who are not independently wealthy) think buying or renting is a good deal. I realize buying or renting in Portland will be more than where I live now. Any other suggestions for neighborhoods (that are not way out in the 'burbs)?

I would suggest parts of SW near Hillsdale/Burlingame, Woodstock, outer SE, and upper Fremont area (around Sandy and 70th).

Mid to Outer SE areas like Lents, Darlington/Brentwood areas. Also, in NE, try Cully and Rose City neighborhoods. Saint Johns is pretty affordable, too, but some areas are more "nice and safe" than others.
