kburton, I'm in Michigan and looking to move out to Oregon too. I'm in Ann Arbor. It's getting really bad around here, isn't it? I've run into several other people in MI that are looking to move to Oregon. Hopefully, the Oregonians don't get too annoyed with us. ;-)

guys, the job scene is very difficult here for waitressing, retail, etc. You should try to line something up before you arrive. I see endless streams of people making the rounds, resumes in hand, through the coffee shops and restaurants around town. Last week I was in a coffee shop and 6 people came in with resumes unsolicited (the owner was not looking to hire), all within a three hour period. Competition is fierce.

Hmmmm..........that could be. There's not many people here on the coast looking for waitress or those kinds of jobs. Maybe try somewhere outside of Portland.

My fiance' is in health (dietetics to be exact) which seems to have jobs everywhere, so she isn't overly worried. I have a Master's degree and currently work in higher education, but intend to be self-employed by then. We're torn between Portland, which has so many things going for it, and Medford, where the weather is a little more to my taste and we have a friend. The friend moved from there to here (Michigan), hated it, and went back! I think we're more concerned about the overall economy of each than with specific career fields....

I'm just being curious as to what type of self-employment you might be considering. I also have my Master's, though in Reading, and have often thought of what next step I'd like to take once I go back to work. I taught for a number of years and am not certain that I want to be in the classroom setting again.
We're moving to the Portland area when school is out and our house sells...it's so amazing out there. Good luck in your decision and on your move!

My Master's is in Organizational Development, and the focus of my work was entrepreneurialism and small business growth. I work in higher education to pay bills, not because I really enjoy it. ;-) If you have a Master's in Reading, have you considered working as a reading coach for college-bound students? College Prep coaching is growing quite a bit and I'm sure there's a market for improving reading skills for high school students bound for college. Set it up with a web site and you could do coaching via online/phone on a nationwide basis. Write articles for your Web site as "free" information for marketing. Good luck to you too!

Ah, I see...currently I've thought of being a reading specialist for elementary kids but tutoring has also come to mind. Hadn't thought of using my skills at the upper level but will look into it. My ideal would have me doing something I love while lending many hours w/ my children and also covering healthcare! That's not too much to ask, now, is it?????
Also, I've thought of working with kids w/ special needs with their reading skills (my son has Down syndrome) in some type of capacity. Who knows...

There are lots of jobs to be had in Portland. Don't just limit yourself to Portland itself, there are many cities all around and considered to be part of the "Portland proper". There is also Vanouver, WA right across the border, a lot of people commute back and forth on both sides and can be a reasonable commute depending on where you live. Portland is a large city so it's going to have a higher crime rate than smaller cities or towns, but I think it's pretty safe as far as a city goes. I don't know how it compares to where you are in MI. My brother and his family lives in NE Portland, has for 15 years and other than a few instances of things disappearing from his yard or back of truck, nothing major crime wise has been committed against them personally.
