I was going to cite my reasons for moving to Portland from Tampa, Florida next spring, but Jay saved me the trouble by listing every one of them! I do not see Portland as "mecca" or perfect, but it has more of what I want than anywhere else. Can't wait to get there (particularly after this almost non-existent AC summer)!

Compared to the midwest outside of Chicago, and most of the South, Portland is exceptional. Compared to San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, NYC, it isn't all that impressive, but it is still nice. Instead of focusing on Portland, compare it to the alternatives, and it looks pretty good with some exceptions. But it is still, in its heart, a big small town, and it always will be.

Sounds like you want paradise with YOU doing all the chosing. No one place is perfect. I have lived all over, and every city, big or small has good & bad. Los Angeles is wonderful. I grew up there. Exciting, lots to do, neat people, the beach, mountains, rural and city areas all in one area. Also gangs, lots of crime, terrible taxes, and a screwed up city government. Sacramento has great people, some good restraunts, close to Lake Tahoe, Reno, SF, colleges, and beautiful country areas. Also, 1 main employer-the State, gangs, a screwy city government, and mosquitos the size of pterodactyls. I want to move to Portland for the clean air, the cooler weather, the rain, and some new fun things to do. I can stand the negatives-whatever they are. and Portland is super dog friendly. My 3 cockers will be very happy!

Ha, yeah right. Portland might be cleaner and greener, but SF is in another league compared to PDX.

I'm from there, dude. I moved here.....from there....on purpose. So the league that you speak of? Not so relevant.

lol....I don't think I asked that at all.

I'll repeat myself, I'm not seeing the attraction.

and the reasons I hear (for me) wouldn't be enough for me to make a drastic move to some place I "heard" was nice. and especially to Portland....It's not all that great. but this is my home, I was born and raised here, my family and friends are here and I'm not moving to someplace that someone said was "nice" "pretty" or whatever the reasons.

funny how I state my opinion about Portland and certain people get all uptight about it....

We are human beings, we get uptight when we strongly disagree with something. Its normal, you do it and so does everyone else.

I suppose my question for you is if you have lived everywhere else because your case sounds like a classic "Need of a change in scenery." You perhaps have lived here your whole life and are bored, that is also normal.

Seriously, if you dont see the attraction why be miserable, why dont you go look for greener pastures? Before you list family and job as a reason, I know plenty of people both personally and here on city data who were able to still make a move to a place they felt they would be happier in despite family and job.
