It's very common at the Farmer's Markets and all the local nurseries, as it grows like an unkillable weed in Portland.

My neighbor grows it on a small plot of land outside her back door and her plants yield enough for the entire neighborhood. In fact she invites people every year to come and pick as much as they like.

She also plants some kind of lemon mint that smells oh so wonderful and drives the cats crazy.

I don't have anything to back this up with, but for some reason I was thinking that Eastern Oregon was known for it's peppermint production? Maybe I read this on a box of peppermint tea...

When you drive through Madras you drive for miles and miles through peppermint and spearmint farms - the farms out that way are a major supplier of oil of mint.

When I first started gardening, I read books that said plant in three's. So, I bought three orange mint plants not realizing how it would spread. LOL Are you talking about lemon balm? It smells great, and you can put it in tea, but also can be invasive.
