I'm an east coast fellow who's considering heading west to Portland, OR. I have a good friend out there who has been trying for years to convince me to move out there. I just graduated with a Master’s degree in Social Studies education. So, as I consider whether I should move out there, a large determining factor will be whether I will be able to find a job.

I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me any information about Portland and surrounding area schools. I'd be looking for a job in a middle or high school as a social studies teacher. Does anyone know pay ranges for teachers? And how competitive is the job market for social studies teachers? Ideally I would like to live in the city and I wouldn't mind it too much if I had to commute to my job if it was outside of the city--but I would not like to have to travel more than about 40 minutes. So, I would appreciate any recommendations for school districts or towns that I might want to look into. Many thanks to all who respond.

"You will never be able to find a job in Portland." I'm just passing on information from other folks on here. Don't shoot the messenger.

Their last post was September 5th 2008. Usually if people do find a job they post their success.

Absolutely! Because it's really nice to hear a success story amongst so many disappointments.

I think you can get a job doing something it just may not be exactly what you want at first but then eventually you can move on to a better one. Never is an exageration.
