Hi everyone,

I grew up in the Beaverton area most of my life and recently graduated from college in the Midwest. I have close friends from high school around here, but am looking to broaden my circle of friends. Could the experts and more seasoned locals provide me with some insight on where to seek this out? I'm already an active gym member, a member of a photography club in Beaverton, etc., but I'm finding it hard to meet people my age to actually engage with on a regular basis. I'll be here for the rest of 2009, so I'm really hoping to build more relationships during that time. I know the spots in Portland, but really lacking in knowledge of the social scene due to my limited time here during college.

I love things like: the outdoors, the Blazers, food, photography, politics, music, social drinking, volunteering...basically anything so hopefully, with your help, I can be proactive and meet some sweet people!

Thanks in advance

Get on Facebook, look up your old friends who might still be in town. There is a flick photography group that has monthly meet ups. You might also look into what public clubs PCC and PUC have.

Failing that, grab yourself a piece of cardboard, a sharpie, and stand on a street corner. You'd meet lots of people that way.

I appreciate the help, hamellr! I'll definitely check out some of those clubs. As for Facebook, I still actively keep in touch with about 30-40 people who are in town long-term, it's just that I'm always looking to make new friends and have a good time. One of the biggest things I miss about college is definitely the social scene, but I'm not willing to be one of those broskis who will are at college campuses all the time to party and "live the good days."

I would check out meetup.com there are all kinds of groups there. I will absolutely plug into some of them after I get there. As I have a business I will of course also be plugging into different business networking groups, I love that Portland even has groups like that with an emphasis on green businesses.

I don't know if you are a church type or not, but if you are not a Christian the Unitarian Universalist Church is a great option, the downtown church has over a thousand members (I was going to call them today!) people of all faiths Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Pagan, atheist, etc., are all welcome there and I bet there are other liberal non-Christrian churches (or places of worship) as well as Christian ones in Portland in addition to UU.

I just reminded myself to Google humanist groups in Portland.

I believe the UU church has and can get you connected to volunteering options as well, that should also be easy to Google. In addition places like city hall, the Portland Business Alliance (chamber of commerce), and maybe even ecotrust may have information on volunteering.

From what I find online I could very easily have a full calender in Portland once I get there.

My challenge is that I don't know anyone there right now, and I want to try to start developing relationships there now, before I move.
