I thought I had found my "perfect city" in WA only to find out today that there are some serious radiation issues there due to cleanup of a nuclear site...

I have entertained Prescott before for relocating, but saw today on another site about the superfund cleanup site 80 miles away from Prescott. Can anyone give me any info on this and what, if any, effect it has had on Prescott?

I am having a hard time finding a suitable location for relocation due to health issues, as well as other issues that impact where I can move to...but hubby has put his foot down he does not want to go anywhere where radiation contamination could become an issue as we want to make this the last move we ever do...

Thx

J

The superfund site you speak of is in Mayer/Dewey and is due to old mining and smelters. It is mostly mercury, lead, arsenic and other such toxins in the soil and in the groundwater for that area.

Prescott is very clean, the only issue might be arsenic in the water table if you are on a well and the possibility of radon if you live in an area with radon in the soil. Two simple tests will determine if those hazards exist. A water test and a radon test.

The superfund site in Humbolt is not 80 miles from Prescott, it's about 20 miles. Which superfund site are you referring to? I find it hard to imagine that a site 80 miles away can possibly have any impact. As DelNec mentioned, the site in Humbolt has mostly to do with contaminated soils from copper (I think) mining. The EPA has already done some remediation to stabilize the soils and stop the blowing of contaminated dust.

i used to work in a lead refinery in Omaha, Nebraska . that plant had been operational since mid 1800 . it closed sometime in 1990s and plant structers were razed , the ground was sealed witha special sealer and a park sits on that site now . what worries me is that site sits on the banks of Missouri river . must be okay as EPA agreed to that .

All I know is the site I was at said it was 80 miles away but did not say what the superfund cleanup was about, perhaps they were measuring to the center of the site, I have no clue... (a competing site so I cannot mention where)...

Well, that site is wrong. Here's a link to the EPA's description of the site.
Superfund Site Overview Iron King Mine And Humboldt Smelter , Pacific Southwest, US EPA

Here's a link to the location of the site:
Yavapai Parcel Viewer

The site is less than 100 acres, and has zero impact on Prescott Valley and Prescott. The only significant impact is for people living near the old mine and smelter, where there might be some dirt contaminated with arsenic and such. I'm not sure if any of the ground water is contaminated in those areas.
