I was driving home from having lunch out with the wife and heard the car radio alert so I turned it up.
It was the National Weather Service telling me that just North of me near Sedona there was a severe thunderstorm producing large hail and lots of rain and it was heading my way.
Then I heard something strange. The guy said "Remember, if you are close enough to see thunder you are in danger."

When it the last time you saw thunder?
And you wonder why they can't get the WX forecasts right??

If you look closely you can actually see the clouds bump together and make the thunder.

Wow, all these years I wondered what that sound was!

Oh well, let us hope for the guy who made the live announcement that it's Friday for him.

You can see it best if you go to an open area.

Knowing how people hang on every word I post let me just say: I'm kidding, people.

I believe he was supposed to say, "if you are close enough to HEAR thunder, you are in danger." Unless he made an error or you heard it incorrectly, they usually say if you HEAR lightening you are in danger.

That's a stretch. I can hear thunder miles away.

That sounds better. If you hear the crack of lightning, you are probably in danger. But, even then, given the erratic behavior of lightning, it is hard to really know what is dangerous.

However, if you can smell the ozone, it was a close one.

Tornado Warning Just Issued for Coconino County - Near Grand Canyon area

At 3PM National Weather Service Meteorologists spotted rotation within a storm that has the signature of producing a tornado!

FOLLOW-UP:

Looks like the storm dissipated and the tornado warning was dropped.

This brought back memories from last years whopping 24 hour / 7+ tornado outburst we had in Yavapai and Coconino Counties. The one twister came very close to Prescott. It was spotted just east of the area. Craazzzzy weather...

Where the prediction is this time is on the other side of the mountain from us and they seem more likely there but they are usually not much. Here is some history and most of them were low level in nature and at lower evevations in Yavapai County to the north quite a ways. It's a large county.
