Hey all yall Prescottians,

my wife and I are most likely moving to Prescott in late August so I can go to
school at Yavapai. We have a few friends in the area, and my wife can transfer her position at Starbucks here out to AZ.
Currently we live in Kauai, and have for the past year and two months.
Before that we lived in western CO, so no CA-yupps here.
Needless to say, the cost of living out here has been prohibitively high.
So we're going into this eyes open as much as we can.
A few questions:

- Cable, specifically for internet, how much do you pay per month?
Who provides it? What's the DSL alternative? What's the quality of service
like with either?

- Electricity. Who is the service provider and what are the rates like? We'd
most likely have a 2-bed place with two people living in it. What would our
bill look like most likely?

- Bad parts of town. Any in Prescott that we should avoid when looking for
rental houses? (not looking in PV, or anywhere else really.)

- Rentals. Looking at Realty sites and Craigslist makes it seem like there's
some really nice rentals out there in the 750-850 range. Is this true?
We pay 875 for a cottage in Kauai that is maybe 350-400 Sq ft.
I hear that things are really slow there, does that mean landlords and rental
agencies are willing to negotiate a little on price? Are they that desperate yet?

- Gas prices. We're paying $3.50 to $3.75 in Kauai. Please tell me it's cheaper there!

- I like to ride motorcycles in my free time. What's the riding season out there?

Anything else that a guy should know before moving out there?
Thanks so much!! We really appreciate it!

Cableone is the provider. You can check their website. I do not remember what we pay, but the service has been pretty good.

APS is the provider. You'll probably pay $50-$65/month for a small apartment.

There are lots of rentals and some landloards are making deals, but don't expect to go to the lowest priced rental in the area and try to get a better deal. Chances are that that price is already a good deal, because the landloard is already cutting his price to get below the competition. If you like a higher priced rental, they may be willing to cut the rate to get the place rented.

Prices are in the $2.40-$2.50 range right now.

24/7, 365 days per year. Bundle up in the winter though or skip January and February.

Used to. Our health insurance effectively bans me from getting on a motorcycle. My wife is happy about that too. Anyway, there are some great roads and places to see around here. Watch out for monsoons in the summer. You might want to find cover if one hits.

I can imagine!
Is the fairgrounds area of town a good section, or should I avoid it?
We're looking in the 750-875 range for rentals, so no, not bottom of the market.

What is the fickle relationship women have with motorcycles? They love to date the cool bad boys on the fast motorcycles, but the minute they actually get hold of such a guy, the motorcycle is the first thing they insist has to go. It's like, once they get their claws into you, they immediately try to ratchet down your Cool Quotient so you won't make a tempting target for any other women on the prowl for a Cool guy on a fast motorcycle.

My apologies to the OP for this diversion from the topic at hand.

Simple solution...get the woman first, then the motorcycle.
I am curious to know what an avg cable bill would be like tho, and about the different parts of town.

Wifey says the home cable bill is $43/mo. We only have internet though. No TV.

nice! Yeah we'll prob'ly steer clear of the TV for now too.
Just interwebs.

Is unemployment still at 10.5-11%?

We did look at moving to Bend, OR, for a while but the unemployment up there is
at a solid 17% are rising.

I live in Sedona and have spent a decent amount of time in Prescott. Prescott has a lot of personality. It has the charm of a smaller town and the resources of a larger one. The job market and potential in Prescott is very nice, compared to everything else within an hour or so. Best of luck to you in the future,
Chad
