With 99.6% of PAT being successful, the competition committee is considering moving the spot for the kick 40 to 49 yards back where 83% are successful. Might or might not be tried during the pre-season games. Could be a problem for the not so good kickers.

And that is where a 2 point conversion is supposed to be played from? Bizarre!
Guess the "point" is to make the 2-pointer more attractive. Make the odds of failure more even. Maybe they should just eliminate any point after attempt. Anyone ever think of NEW ways to score, ways that never existed? Can't say I have a list, but if the old ways are yawners, then forcing teams to give more thought to special teams would be beneficial. As it is, I almost NEVER hear analysts give the edge to a team because of special teams strength.
And now that I mention that, are they satisfied with the change to make more touchbacks at kickoff? Seems to me that they wouldn't even need a kickoff if they want the kicks to go out of the end zone. There is a lot of wild woolly action on kick returns.

I think the point is not to make the PAT less of a routine play. I mean if the play happens 99.6% one way what is the point of having the play at all. I think the NFL would be happy with the PAT being as successful as the freethrow which is probably around 80% on average. The 2 point is still harder than a 40 yard goal.

That'd make the most sense to me. Either one is a gamble, and the coach gets to choose which gamble the team will make. The total point production could rise with increased kickoffs. BUT if the kickoff was eliminated too and the teams line up at the 20 yard line with the other team in possession, that would allow a greater number of scoring drives, too. Which I think would be good.
How about making the rule that a kick for a PAT must be a dropkick instead of a held place kick?
