I live in Iowa, and I'd say this map pretty much nails it. Vikings fans in the north central and northwest, Chiefs fans in the southwest, Bears fans in the east, and Packers fans scattered throughout the state. I know a lot of Steelers fans too, but they're definitely not the majority anywhere in any county in the state. I live in Des Moines and fandom seems pretty evenly distributed among the above 4. I think it's cool that Iowa is 1 of the only states to have 4 teams represented, but it makes total geographical sense.
I read the article, and I believe the author is wrong about one thing. He referenced South Carolina and how there is a pocket of Jaguars fans thrown in there. Looking at the color represented in that map, and judging from the fans in that area, I believe that yellow-ish color is supposed to represent Steelers Fans and not Jaguars fans.
I was also thinking how small the Rams fanbase is, but it sure does beat the Jets fanbase huh???
Having less than the majority of fans in the NY metro still probably means the Jets have WAY more fans than the rams even though they are the majority in their much smaller metro.
What you have to remember is the map is made up of counties and the team that the majority of fans in that county support. So, because the Giants and Jets share a territory, and the Giants have been the better team during the past few years, they have the majority in those areas.
Also, saying that you know people in your area that are fans of other teams is great, but the majority in that county is supporting the team shown on the map.
Example, I live in a county that's shown to be a fan of the Giants, but I'm a Panthers fan. So I don't register on this map.
But again, my biggest concern with the article, not the map, is that they say the Jags are represented in S. Carolina, but that's clearly the Steelers. No one is going to be a Jags fan unless they have to lol.
yes and would likely be similar for the Mets.
Both have a decent following but are outnumbered by Giants and Yanks respectively - it is not as if thee are not large numbers who support these teams its more that there are proportionally more for the Giants and Yanks.
Its also funny to me that there seems to be a pretty consistent loyalty (Jets and Mets or Giants and Yanks)
But there really is not a shortage of Jets (or even Mets) fans - just not a majority and in a metro of 25 Million even 20-25% is large
