Don Hutson. Dominated the position like no other, and at a time when the passing game was usually an afterthought at most, not to mention how defenses could maul a WR all over the field legally, and oh btw no fancy gloves to wear or other specialized equipment either...need I go on...
Largent was definitely up there! An amazing talent esp when you consider he wasn't esp tall or fast etc. Some of the best hands and route-running ever.

I was probably an infant when he retired, but I've some of his highlights from NFL films, he ran his patterns well, could leap well too, saw one where he leaped over a guy clean off the ground.
Speaking of leapers, I don't know if one could consider him the best, but Lance Alworth, nicknamed Bambi by his San Diego teammates was probably the best WR of the 60's. It's been said that the "San Diego sports curse" began when he was traded to Dallas and won a SB with them.
One of my favorite videos from NFL Films is a one hour video called "The Dream Team". The receivers they picked covered the NFL through the decades: Don Hutson (30's and 40's), Raymond Berry (50's and 60's), Lance Alworth (60's and 70's), and Jerry Rice (1985 to 2004). NFL Films picked these four receivers as the best in NFL history.

Reason: addition
You guys are all smoking something with your Hutson and Largent choices. Two slow white guys who wouldnt be starters on ANY team today.
Jerry Rice is hands down the best wide receiver to ever play the game.
Largent DID have incredible hands but his lack of speed and poor YAC (yards after catch) does not put him in the top 5 wide receivers. Top Ten, yes, but not at all top Five.
In No Particular Order:
Jerry Rice
Terrell Owens
Randy Moss
Lynn Swann
Wes Chandler
James Lofton
Art Monk
Crazy Legs Hirsch
Michael Irvin
Steve Largent
Tim Brown
Bob Hayes

Ummm Jerry Rice wasn't a speed receiver either more of a possession guy. Dont have to be fast to be a great WR, look at Hines Ward today the guy can catch anything but isn't going to burn you down the field.
